Tignes Summer
May 3rd, 2009 by chalettignes
There are very few ski resorts that can offer great summer activities. Tignes is one of the. And guess what, summer skiing is not the main reason to visit Tignes in the summer, despite Tignes’ great summer skiing boasting 16 ski lifts, 20 km of runs and a vertical drop of over 750 m at 3450 m.
Tignes has plenty of outdoor and leisure activities on offer during the summer season that lasts from mid June to mid September. And contrary to Val D’Isere the place is not a ghost town either with 40% of bars and restaurants open for business. Tignes summer fills a little more chilled than the energy packed winter season. Temperatures are also summer like with plenty of sun and sun bathing opportunities should you want to chill in the afternoon
Main activities during the summer:
- glacier skiing (from 7am – 2pm) – plenty of time to do other stuff in the afternoon
- walking & hiking – lots of trais leading from Tignes into nearby mountains
- tennis – Tignes got 50+ tennis courts
- 18 hole golf – Tignes has got the highest golf hole in Europe
- mountain biking – plenty of bike hire places, you don’t need to bring your own bike
- downhill cross biking – you need to hire special bikes and protective gear, all available at low rates
- climbing – great peaks to climb, if climbing is your thing. Guides available too
- via ferrata – climbing with the security of fixed rope. Tignes got some of the most sunning routes in the Alps
- swimming – Tignes got large swimming pool with indoor slides and wellness centre
- running / jogging – special tracks around the lake makes the perfect setting for a quick run
- fishing – Tignes got a medium size lake where fishing permits can be obtained
- rafting – activity operators offer rafting, abseiling etc in nearby river
- Other activities: volleyball, football, skate boarding etc.
Plenty to do – I would recommend anybody to spend a few days in Tignes during summer. Worth while a visit!!
